WhatsApp Reading Statuses (Read Receipts) and Re-engagement Triggers

WhatsApp Read Statuses (Read Receipts) and re-engagement triggers

On WhatsApp, the lifecycle of a message has 4 key statuses:

  1. queued: Message queued on our EnvoiSMS Cloud infrastructure.
  2. sent: Successfully transmitted to Meta Cloud API servers (a gray check mark ✓).
  3. delivered: Received on the recipient's smartphone (two gray checkmarks ✓✓).
  4. read: Opened and read by the recipient (two blue checkmarks 🔵🔵).

Why the read status is strategic in e-commerce

Precise reading tracking helps automate intelligent re-engagement scenarios:

Scenario 1: Conditional abandoned cart relaunch

  • If the message is Read but no purchase is detected within 2 hours, automatically send a reminder with a personalized offer or live support.
  • If the message remains Unread (delivered), do not send an aggressive reminder in order to preserve your Meta Quality Rating.

Scenario 2: Coordination of deliveries

Knowing exactly when a customer has read their delivery notice allows your logistics team to plan delivery routes accurately.

Webhook event message.read

EnvoiSMS.ma transmits a webhook in real time as soon as the user reads the message:```json

{

"event": "message.read",

"data": {

"id": "msg_01J...",

"to": "+212612345678",

"channel": "whatsapp",

"status": "read",

"read_at": "2026-08-26T13:25:00.000Z"

},

"timestamp": "2026-08-26T13:25:00.000Z"

}
