The integration of an [SMS API in Morocco](/fr/api-sms-maroc/) is often very quick. But once in production, faced with real Moroccan numbers (IAM, Orange, inwi) and under the load of mass mailings, errors occur.

Unlike SMPP protocols where complex PDUs are decrypted in hexadecimal, modern REST APIs use standard HTTP status codes. However, official documentation sometimes lacks business context. What does a 400 error actually mean in the context of sending SMS to Morocco?

Here is the "cheat sheet" from Moroccan developers: the list of the most common SMS API error codes, their real business meaning, and how to resolve them without wasting time.

Quick Table of SMS API HTTP Errors

HTTP codeError NameJob MeaningQuick Fix
400Bad RequestThe number format is invalid or the message is empty.Format to international standard (2126...).
401UnauthorizedAPI key missing or expired.Check the Authorization: Bearer header.
402Payment RequiredNo more credit on your account.Recharge your account from the dashboard.
403ForbiddenUnauthorized sender ID or blocked IP address.Request Sender ID activation from support.
429Too Many RequestsYou are sending too quickly (Throttling).Slow down the loop or switch to the Bulk endpoint.
500InternalErrorThe SMS gateway is down (very rare).Queue and try again.
503Service UnavailableNetwork failure on the operator side (IAM/Inwi/Orange).Monitor the DLR, try again after 5 minutes.

Let's dissect the fatal errors: 400 and 403

Error 400: Bad Request This is the cause of 80% of initial integration failures. - Local cause: Moroccan users often enter their number as 0661123456. If you pass this number as it is to the API, it will return you an error 400. - Solution: Always clean the entry. Remove spaces and the original 0, and prefix with 212.

Error 403: Forbidden (Compliance Error) Your API key is good (you don’t have 401), but the request is rejected. - Local cause: In Morocco, you can’t use an alfanumeric Sender ID (e.g., MA MARQUE) unless it has been explicitly approved by the operator. If you send a request with sender: "MON APP" while it is not whiteliste on your account, you will receive a 403. - Solution: Use the default Sender ID provided during your tests, or contact support to submit your brand authorization form with your RC.

The famous 429

If you run a simple for loop in PHP or Node.js to send 50,000 promotional text messages for Black Friday, you will hit a wall very quickly.

Error 429: Too Many Requests REST APIs impose a rate limit, often expressed as Requests per Second (RPS). - The problem: Sending an SMS per HTTP request in an asynchronous loop will saturate the connection and trigger rejections 429. Rejected messages will be lost. - The solution: Do not use the unit endpoint for mass sending. Use the API’s Bulk endpoint (which accepts a table of numbers in a single JSON payload) to bypass the HTTP flow limit.

Don’t confuse “HTTP Success” and “Received Message”

A HTTP code 200/202 does not mean that the SMS has been received by the customer. This only means that the SMS gateway has accepted your request. The message may still fail later if the phone is turned off or if the number is no longer assigned. To know the true delivery status (DLR), you must imperatively implement a Receipt Webhook in your architecture.
